Privacy
This is a site about machines that watch people. So here is exactly what this one does.
Who we are
Bots & Prayers is produced by Malice Arts. Questions about your data go to magnus@botsandprayers.church.
On every page
- Our web host, GreenGeeks, keeps standard server logs, including your internet address, so the site can run and be protected. We use them for nothing else.
- We count visits with Independent Analytics, which runs on our own server and sets no cookies. It uses your internet address to work out your country and town, then scrambles your address and browser details into a code that can’t be turned back. It records which pages you saw, where you came from and what kind of device you used. The data stays on our server. The code changes every day, and we delete the records after a year.
- Our fonts come from Google Fonts. To send them, Google receives your internet address.
- No advertising trackers. No Google Analytics, no Meta pixel. We don’t sell or share your data.
- We set no cookies for visitors. WordPress sets cookies only for people who log in to edit the site.
On the homepage
- As you move through the slides, the page notes, on your device only, how long you spend on each one and whether your cursor strays to the edge of the saint. The Confessional prints this back to you as a receipt, along with your type of device and battery level. None of it is sent to us, and it is gone when you close the page.
On “Before you say a word”
- The page reads your device, settings, fonts, battery and what you do on the page inside your own browser. None of it is sent to us.
- To name your town, it sends your internet address to a lookup service, ipwho.is, or geojs.io if that fails. That service receives your address. We receive nothing.
- If you type your name, it stays on your phone. It goes to another site only when you tap that site’s button, as if you had typed it there yourself.
- If you ask us to remember you, the page keeps a short note on your phone: when you visited, a code for your device, what kind of device it is and your town. It stays on your phone. “Forget me” deletes it, and so does clearing your browser data.
- If you allow location, your position is shown to you and goes nowhere else.
The wall
- If you add your name on Stand with it, we keep the name and the handle you give, with the time. Both are shown publicly on the wall, with the line you add after “I stand with”.
- If you give an email address for ticket news, it is kept in a separate private file. It is never shown on the wall or returned by the site, and it is used only to tell you when tickets go on sale. Email us and we will delete it. No money and no cookies are involved.
- So one person cannot flood the wall, we keep a scrambled code made from your internet address and the date for 24 hours. It cannot be turned back into your address, and it is then deleted.
- To take your name down, email magnus@botsandprayers.church and we will remove it.
The legal part
Under UK data protection law, we rely on our legitimate interest in running and understanding the site for the server logs and visit counts, and on your consent for the “remember me” note and location. You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it, by emailing the address above. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
